National recognition for German student

April 23rd, 2020

A Sixth Form student at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools has been recognised in a national essay-writing competition.

Edward, a Year 12 student at Monmouth School for Boys, has secured a place on the German Scholarships Programme run by the UK-German Connection.

Only eight students nationally each year are offered places on the programme which is an excellent opportunity for them to improve their language skills and learn more about the German culture.

Edward, 17, is studying German A level at Monmouth School for Girls.
He was honoured for his outstanding essay on the future importance of the German language.

The successful scholars are rewarded with a full-time programme of activities, including a week in Bonn, school visits and project work, a two-week home stay with German host families and visits to museums, and famous cities such as Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich.

“In the light of the current coronavirus pandemic, the visit will not be able to take place as planned in the summer holidays,” said Mrs Helen Smail, Head of Modern Foreign Languages at Monmouth School for Girls.

“However, an alternative programme is envisaged for Edward and the other winners at some point in the autumn.”
