Monmouth School for Boys is among the best in the country for its coaching, facilities and cricket provision.

Monmouth has been listed in The Cricketer Schools Guide 2021, which features the top 100 senior schools in a bumper 148-supplement.

The school was named in the guide last year and retains its status as the only Welsh school in the prestigious cricket supplement.

The entries were judged against a set of criteria, with the chosen schools having outstanding facilities, fixture programmes and coaching.

“We are delighted that Monmouth School for Boys has been named in the top 100 senior schools for cricket in the country,” said Headmaster, Mr Simon Dorman.

“As a school, we have outstanding coaches, wonderful facilities and talented players and are continuing to build strong partnerships with local clubs, both at recreational and professional levels.

“Due to the restrictions, it was a challenging time for cricket last summer, but we had online activities to keep the pupils engaged, ran one-to-one coaching sessions when we were able to, and then held intra-school matches when the boys returned in September.”

Director of Sport at Monmouth School for Boys, Mr Andrew Jones, added: “Our partnership with Glamorgan is continuing to flourish.

“We have five boys training with the Glamorgan Academy this winter, including Harry, who was part of the Welsh club’s first-team squad last summer.

“In addition to Glamorgan, we have a young player who is training throughout the winter with Gloucestershire Cricket Board’s junior programme.

“We were delighted to host a thriving Cricket Festival at our school in September that featured the best 50 players in Wales for their age groups.

“Our coaching team includes former Glamorgan and England opening batsman, Steve James, who is also working to develop girls’ cricket at our sister school, Monmouth School for Girls.”

The Cricketer magazine editor, Simon Hughes, said: “This year’s Schools Guide is particularly important in showcasing our schools who have kept the game alive through a very challenging summer.

“There should be deserved praise for all the teachers, coaches and volunteers who have put in so much hard work, in the most difficult of circumstances, to preserve a love of the game among the next generation.”

The Cricketer Schools Guide 2021 is included in the December issue of The Cricketer, available from 27th November.

As well as appearing in print alongside the magazine, the guide will be available on The Cricketer website from 15th December.

Mr Jones added: “Following on from a very successful 2018 Sri Lanka tour, we are planning a tour to the Caribbean in 2021.

“At present Barbados is the destination. The tour is scheduled to include two squads and consist of five games per squad as well as touring the island.”
