Monmouth Chapel Choir at St Davids Cathedral

February 28, 2017

Monmouth School Chapel Choir travelled to St. Davids just a day after returning from Half Term, to sing Evensong in the most atmospheric of UK Cathedrals.  The repertoire consisted of George Dyson’s magnificent Evening Canticles in D, plus William Harris’s Holy is the true Light as the Introit, and John Ireland’s famous Greater Love Hath No Man as the Anthem, as well as Psalms and Responses.  Full choral evensong is a big challenge for a choir.

After two rehearsals, (one in the Song School and one in the lovely mediaeval stalls), the service was sung to a Quire packed with tourists and family members (it was Half Term down there).  A member of the congregation emailed Mr. Lawson the day after saying I just wanted to say I much enjoyed your evensong tonight down at the cathedral – great music sung with great gusto!  Full marks to the boys for their enthusiasm, and I loved the sound of the back rows in the unison psalm verses.
