On Tuesday, the third Brecon League fixture was held at Brecon High School, a tense finale as both juniors and seniors were in the lead by 1 point only and needed to beat Llandrindod High School in this final fixture.

The juniors did indeed win, with Rowan 2nd, Josh 6th, Charlie 11th, Ieuan 12th and Joe 13th out of around 80 runners.  The senior event could hardly have been closer.  It finished 32-32, with Rory 5th, Robbie 7th, Finn 8th, Ben 12thand Josh 13th.  However, Monmouth’s last counter (4 to count from each school) was 3 places higher than Llandrindod’s and so Monmouth won. Over the 3 fixtures, then, Monmouth won both age groups and, in addition, Rowan and Josh (who has 2 more years in this age group!) received 1st and 6th individual medals respectively, while in the senior event Rory and Finn gained 3rd and 6th individual medals.

Head of cross-country Mr Dawson was delighted with these results and, as he explains, there may be even better to come next year, ‘A particularly good feature of this result is that Josh, Ed, James and Lewis (and others) have another 2 years in this (junior) age group, and Charlie another 1 year.  Similarly, in the seniors, Robbie, Ben and Oliver all have another 3 years and Ben H another 2, so although we’re going to lose some good VI2 boys, we’ve got a pretty good team coming forward.’

Well done to all of the boys involved!
