Mathematicians triumph in competition

December 8, 2018

Last month, 35 boys from years 12 and 13 (together with Robin in year 11 and Kit in year 10) sat the Senior UKMT Maths Challenge. Over 80,000 pupils across the UK took part and of our 35 boys, 6 received a Gold certificate, 13 Silver and 10 Bronze. Jerome was ‘Best in School’, and qualified for the follow-on ‘Maths Olympiad’, a three-and-a-half-hour worldwide competition. 5 others qualified for the follow-on ‘Kangaroo’ round. Results of these are awaited.

On Monday the 26th November a team of four boys Jerome, Joe, Ben and Alex from years 12 and 13 represented the school at the Senior Maths Team Challenge. In the first round of 10 questions our boys scored 9 out of 10, the leaders 10/10, in the second round we scored 63/65, the leaders 64/65 and in the final round the scores were the same. So it was a close result with our team coming in a very close third – just two wrong questions separating them from the final winners.
