George Shuffrey string competition showcases musical talent

November 19, 2019

Some large-scale repertoire was on show in the String Competition this year. Max opened with a dramatic account of Küchler’s Concerto in D Major and was followed by Jason who gave us Lully’s delightful Gavotte. Chris’ Introduction and Polonaise was accomplished and Sam gave us an ambitious rendition of Dvo?ák’s Sonatina in G Major. Gwyndaf gave us Dancla’s show-piece Air Varie no 5 and Milo followed with Seitz’s Allegretto Moderato. Mathis closed with the justly-famous Le Cigne by Saint-Saëns.

The adjudicator was Stephen Broom, former Principal Viola in the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. He focused on bow technique in his comments, giving second place to Chris and first place to Sam for his Dvo?ák.
