Business-savvy students at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools clinched five awards in a regional competition.

The dynamic Sixth Form students created two eco-friendly companies and were rewarded for their endeavour at Young Enterprise Wales’ Newport and Monmouthshire regional finals.

Each company contained a mix of A level students from Monmouth School for Boys and Monmouth School for Girls.

Eco Panda, which has been selling bamboo straws, finished runners-up overall and scooped a hat-trick of awards for Marketing, Financial Management and Sustainability.

The company was headed by pupil, Tom, at Monmouth School for Boys and its objective was to replace plastic straws which are causing damage to oceans and wildlife.

Qube, led by pupil, Amelia, at Monmouth School for Girls, has been producing sustainable photo frames and the group won awards for Creativity and Best Product/Service.

Qube developed photo frames from recyclable wood and appealed for a more sustainable future within people’s homes.

The companies had to write a company report on their business complete with financial accounts to date; design and build a trade stand to promote their business; interview with the panel of four judges at the trade stand and deliver a four-minute presentation to an audience made up of judges, fellow competitors, dignitaries and other invited guests.

Business advisor, Dr Delyth Harris, was recognised by Young Enterprise Wales for her five years’ volunteer service to the programme at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools.
