Enterprising Students discover the City

Young Enterprise Initiative

A group of 10 boys and 10 girls from Monmouth School and HMSG took a trip to London last Monday and Tuesday on the annual Monmouth Enterprise Initiative visit.

The Monmouth Enterprise Initiative is an exciting opportunity for our students to gain an insight into the business world of the City of London and this year’s invitation was made by Lord Ezra, a Haberdasher and Old Boy of Monmouth School,  as well as the Haberdashers’ Company. The event was sponsored by The Worshipful Company of Insurers of the City of London who provided ten companies involved in insurance for pupils to visit in small groups, including such names as Argo Global, Tokio Marine Kiln, Markel, Aon Benfield, Hiscox, DWF, Willis, Marsh, XL Catlin and Chaucer.

The students day included the opportunity to meet with senior management, underwriters, brokers and other practitioners, and graduate trainees to give a flavour of the different roles that are available in the insurance market. The day was then rounded off with a dinner at Haberdasher’s Hall at which representatives of City businesses hosted the tables and gave speeches.

All of the students involved obviously understood what a great opportunity this was and a selection of their comments are below:

“it gave a realistic view of an industry which I previously knew very little about….. a great opportunity to network, learn about insurance and the tradition of the Haberdashers….. I particularly enjoyed the meal at Haberdashers’ Hall ….. the tour of Lloyd’s was a fascinating experience ….. the quality of the trip was high ….. meeting pupils from other Haberdashers’ schools was interesting ….. a brilliant event.”

An excellent opportunity which our students have obviously taken full advantage of, great thanks must go to Amanda Poyner and James Boiling who accompanied the trip.
