Monmouth School for Boys is fortunate to have been given an endowment specifically for the purpose of awarding prizes in solo music competitions. Each year there is the Kent-Dodsworth Competition for Brass Players, the Blakes Solo Song Competition, the Hatton-Bucknall Competition for Woodwind Players, the George Shuffrey Competition for String Players and the Michael Williams Piano Competition. For each of them we engage an accomplished musician to act as a professional adjudicator.
These competitions are the principal opportunity in the school year for formal solo performance. The occasions on which they take place are very often highly polished evenings of advanced music making and the prizes act as an incentive for the boys to try out repertoire they may later use in examinations or other performances.
