Rowers from Monmouth School for Boys finished runners-up in two events at the 2018 Home International Regatta in Ireland.

Robbie, Iwan, Ben, Antony and Georg shone for Wales’ Junior Men’s team in Cork.

Despite being hit by illness, the Monmouth boys, coxed by Megan, achieved second places in both the Junior Men’s Coxed VIII and in the Junior Men’s Coxed IV.

On both occasions, the boys rowed superbly but lost out to two very strong England crews selected from the Great Britain trials’ process.

It was a memorable weekend for Iwan, who was named as the Wales Boys’ team captain for the showpiece on Inniscarra Lake.

Monmouth School for Girls’ pupils Stephanie, Sophia and cox Abigail also rowed with skill after being chosen to represent Wales’ Junior Women’s team for the first time.

The Monmouth girls finished fourth in the Junior Women’s Coxed VIII and also in the Junior Women’s Coxed IV.

Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools had the largest representation in the Welsh squad with rowers from Monmouth Comprehensive School highlighting the strength of junior rowing in the town.

Monmouth-based Julia Cowton was the junior Wales girls’ team co-ordinator and was pleased by the encouraging performances from her squad.

The regatta saw two new trophies presented by Wales.

The John Hartland junior men’s trophy is named after the sport’s former national chief and Monmouth School for Boys’ rowing coach, which was won in the first year by England.

The Griffiths Family trophy for outstanding volunteering at the event was awarded straight back to Monmouth School for Boys’ Master in Charge of Rowing, Mr John Griffiths, and his wife, Sue, as the first recipients.
