Bishop of Monmouth welcomed for Confirmation Service

May 19, 2017

Eleven pupils took part in the Confirmation service in the Monmouth School Chapel on 14th May, at which the Bishop of Monmouth (the Rt Revd Richard Pain) preached, confirmed candidates and presided at Holy Communion.  Boys and girls took part in preparation sessions throughout the Lent Term, and a day retreat at Hereford Cathedral early in the Summer Term.  A number of those who took part in the preparation decided they were not yet ready to be confirmed and, along with the candidates, have continued attending optional sessions to explore their faith.  Candidates were asked what they had learned and why they wished to be confirmed, and responses ranged from being struck by forgiveness in Christianity, to wanting to own for themselves the faith with which they grew up.  Others pointed to the sense of purpose they detect in the world and in their lives, and wanting to have what they have learned from the Bible shape their future decisions.  A number of families and godparents were able to attend the standing room only service in the Chapel, while boarders were additionally supported by their houseparents, and all were welcomed by the Headmaster and Headmistress at a reception in the Library.

This was also the final service of the year for the Chapel Choir, whose musical offerings under the direction of Mr David Lawson were of high calibre, as ever.  For Alex, Tomos and Zelig, it was their final choral service after several years, progressing from being boy trebles in Form I.  Overall, the day was one at which the marvellous gifts God has given were on display and used in service to benefit our community.
