Ben dazzles with titanic art project

September 3rd, 2019

As a dedicated rower and a talented artist, Ben does not shy away from a challenge.

And the Monmouth School for Boys’ pupil tackled a titanic project for his 10-hour Art and Design GCSE exam.

Inspired by street art and stencilling, Ben chose to use an old rowing training boat as his canvas.

Ben created his work in two marquees and completed the design before transporting his impressive artwork back to the school’s rowing club boathouse.

With time against him, Ben demonstrated excellent organisational skills and used the repeat-pattern stencil technique.

Ben’s imagery included simplified rowing motifs and he drew inspiration from the futurist artists who explored ways of representing energy and movement.

His inclusion of chevrons was inspired by the dazzle ships in World War One.

As well as an outstanding grade for his exam, Ben’s project was a talking point at school and the boat has been given a new lease of life on the River Wye.
