The Heart Project
The Heart Project is now complete.
Visitors to Monmouth School for Boys will have seen our splendid new building. Its planning and construction came under the banner of The Heart Project – a very exciting, major building project that immediately began to fulfil its promise to have a beneficial impact on all members of the school community. Thanks to a release of capital by the Trustees of the William Jones’s Schools Foundation at Haberdashers’ Hall, the first and second phase of the project increased the size and number of classrooms, replaced existing rooms, improved boarding facilities, streamlined classroom locations, provided appropriate reception and meeting facilities and extended play and congregating spaces. The ultimate aim was to provide a ‘heart’ at the centre of the school.
Phase 1 of The Heart Project was completed with the conversion of the old Grange building into fully en-suite, single study boarding accommodation for all our Y13 boarders in their pre-university year. The building opened in September 2011, and Mr Kingsley Jones is the first housemaster of this new Y13 house. A new experience for Monmouth School for Boys boarders, Buchanan House is an excellent preparation for university, helping students to focus on final examinations in Year13. Year 12 boarders have also benefited from the improvement in accommodation in the remaining boarding houses as well as an earlier opportunity to take responsibility for the running of their boarding house as they become the senior year in Weirhead, New House and School House.
In September 2011, another change happened as the junior boarders transferred from St James House to Chapel House, enabling us to expand the provision we offer to boys in Monmouth School Boys’ Prep. We now provide superb care and accommodation for boys as young as 9.
Phase 2 saw the demolition of the Red Lion block and the construction of The William Jones Building, a 20 classroom block with reception and administration facilities, which opened officially in March 2014.
