Boarding 2017 Appeal

At Monmouth School for Boys we are justly proud of our boarding, having been voted Archant’s Best British Boarding School 2011 (in a vote by parents). Around 30% of our pupils are boarders, and one of the reasons for the success of our boarding is, we believe, that we regard our boarders as an important and integral part of our school community.

Every day in boarding is special as there is so much to share and be involved with. Our aim is to ensure that everyone feels welcome and supported and that all boys have an opportunity to contribute to boarding life.

“Our aim is that every boarder should enjoy a full and rich experience of school life and to come out the other end happy, with lifelong friends, lovely memories and a strong sense of society.”
Kingsley Jones, Head of Boarding.

We have invested £2million in structural improvements.

We need a further £300,000 to finish the interiors which will have a dramatic impact on our boys. Help us to raise the last £300,000 for internal development.

A message from the Headmaster

Boarding in Monmouth School for Boys is thriving. To provide the Monmouth boys with the best possible amenities, we have been undertaking major works to upgrade accommodation in New House and School House. A complete refit of dormitories and study rooms, communal areas and bathrooms is well underway, with essential work to the exterior of these historic buildings also taking place at the same time.

We await planning permission to then start work on a very ambitious reformation of Weirhead House. This is a significant and essential project for the School: even Weirhead’s most loyal supporters will accept that the building has deteriorated. We plan to clad the unsightly concrete building with material that will blend in with the rest of the sandstone buildings on site, renew all windows and replace the roof. We will also be completely renovating the interior of the House to ensure that bedrooms and communal spaces provide first-class accommodation for Monmouth boys.

The renovation of our boarding accommodation will allow us to continue to attract high-calibre students to Monmouth School for Boys.

Although the School has already allocated significant funding to this project, we are seeking the support of friends and former students to complete the work. This will enable us to continue to offer a Monmouth School for Boys boarding education for those whose homes are not commutable on a daily basis.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you are able to give to support this important improvement to School facilities.

Boarding Testimonials

I settled in on my first day. Over the last four years my boarding highlights include going paintballing for the first time, messing about in the garden with the gap year boarding assistants and making friends for life. Because you’re all together 24/7 it feels like you’re part of a big family.

When you get back from school at the end of the day the atmosphere is really nice. Boarding has helped me gain a lot of confidence – it will stand me well in the future. When I go off to University I feel like I’ll be a lot more independent than I would have been otherwise.”

Ben, 13, has boarded for four years. His father is in the military

“I came to Monmouth with my sister. She wanted to go to England, so I came with her. Everyone is so friendly to me. Our boarding house is so close to school and you can make lots of friends here. Sometimes we go over to the girls’ school. I play rugby and tennis too. I like that, I can be more independent here.

Jay, 12, is from Hong Kong and started boarding in September
