A promising Monmouth athlete has clinched a silver medal at the Welsh Athletics Senior Indoor Championships in Cardiff.

Antonia, 14, overcame a broken toe to secure the runners-up spot in the Under-17s Women’s 300m at the National Indoor Athletics Centre.

It was Antonia’s first 300m race since the England Athletics Outdoor Championships last summer when she was hampered by an ankle injury.

And the Monmouth School for Girls’ pupil, who is a member of Newport Harriers, battled through the pain barrier last weekend after damaging her toe in training.

The teenager won her heat and was seeded second for the final behind Swansea Harriers’ Macey, who was ranked 18th in the UK last year at U17W 300m.

After a slow start, Antonia moved into second place at the lane break only to be overtaken at the end of the back straight by Pembrokeshire Harriers’ Flavia.

However, Antonia’s endurance training kicked in. She showed tremendous strength in the final 30 metres to press ahead of the West Wales runner to finish a clear second.

The atmosphere was electric because the final took place at the same time as a Combined Events international match between Great Britain, France, Poland, Spain and the Czech Republic.

Antonia won silver and bronze medals at the Welsh Athletics Junior Championships last year and is looking forward to the summer season when her focus will be on the 300m and 300m hurdles.
