All in for ullamaliztli!

May 26, 2015

As part of their enrichment this week, Year 5 tried their hand at the ancient Mesoamerican game of Ullamaliztli. This was a very popular and brutal game played by the Aztecs, involving a heavy rubber ball, two 35 inch stone hoops and a 200 foot L-shaped ball court.

The object of the game was to get the ball through the stone hoops, moving the ball around the court with only your hips, elbows, knees and head to eliminate the opposing team. Losing teams were often sacrificed to please the gods! We decided not to follow that particular rule. The girls found the game very entertaining but extremely difficult, particularly trying to aim the ball using just their hips!
